Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Displacement Reported

The island nation was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and displaced over a million residents.

Officials stated that the massive storm triggered extensive flash flooding, coastal inundation, mudslides, and fierce gale-force winds, leading to the evacuation of 1.4 million people across the country.

Extensive Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews documented rising waters reaching the tops of houses and residences being swept away by strong flows.

Our team saved fourteen people who were trapped atop a house surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. One resident also called in panic, saying the roof of his house was about to be ripped off by the wind. We saved him and four relatives.”

By Monday, officials confirmed at least two deaths: a drowning victim on the island and another killed after her home gave way on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The super typhoon was downgraded to a severe tropical storm early Monday while moving over the main island, home to the national capital.

Per meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is expected to continue weakening as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service indicated it was still working to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed at least 224 people and left another 135 missing before moving on toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for the missing persons were halted on Sunday due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is causing cyclones more intense and frequent. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to impact the nation this year.

Scientists have found that the rate of super-typhoons striking the islands has increased doubled in the past twenty years.

International estimates suggest that intense storms result in approximately US$3.5 million in losses to the country every year.

The Philippine president declared an emergency declaration last week because of the extensive devastation from Kalmaegi and the expected damage from the new storm.
