Seven individuals accused of being the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost began their trial on this week, accused for violent actions against rightwing extremists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.
Global terror listing and prosecution case
Earlier this month, the US government classified the organization as a terrorist group together with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.
Authorities in Germany claim the network was responsible for targeting locations in Germany and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.
Some suspects are allegedly accused of using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several with serious injuries.
Court proceedings and international connections
The trial involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G. and Paul M., are additionally accused for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, coinciding with an annual event known as the “day of honor” that draws rightwing extremists from across Europe.
Separately, a different German individual, Maja T, is facing trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted assault against far-right activists in the lead-up to the same rally in 2023.
Historical background and organizational structure
The former East Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that counter them.
Prosecutors describe Johann G as a high-ranking member within the organization, responsible for organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.
Alongside Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities overseen by the suspect, the network allegedly accumulated tools, pepper spray, disguises and communication devices.
Prior legal cases and global responses
A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E, became a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.
America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the US, freezes any assets they may have within the American economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.
The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the US decision and called on the government in Berlin to follow suit. However, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “taken note” of the US designation.
“The threat posed by the organization has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or remain detained.”
