New research suggests that people who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using such drugs need to be aware of the risk of quick weight regain when the therapy is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a return to original mass within about a year and a half.
Comparing Treatments
The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.
Researchers note that people who shed pounds through dieting usually have a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Doctors believe the mode of action of the injections explains the heightened regain.
These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."
A Chronic Disease?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have stopped the jabs report a intense resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled a patient.
This difficulty is compounded if patients have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Growing Use
Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural management.
