Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a coordinated attack targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by intelligence, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of approach shafts providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - alternatively referred to as ISIS - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation shows the UK's leading role, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces participating in this mission for their professionalism and their valour," he added. "They were among thousands of UK service members stationed over the festive period. This operation, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our security, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."

In December, the US military executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in the country, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN estimates Daesh still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
