Cancellieri Displays Glimpses of Brilliance in Positive Aspect for Struggling Lazio

The feeling at Lazio's home ground was far from happy this past Saturday. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a side that had conceded ten goals while managing only two goals in their last five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were concluding their most recent demonstration in an ongoing feud with chairman Claudio Lotito.

A Season Unraveling?

Was Lazio's season coming unstitched, or was there ever a thread keeping it intact to start with? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri to lead the team in the summer transfer window, only for him admitted that the club had not mentioned the transfer ban they were set to be hit with for financial irregularities. Rumours that he could resign were unfounded, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "swindled" him.

The Roman club became as messy during matches as off the field, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing their other first five games, featuring the derby della Capitale. Throughout this period, it has been hard to ascertain if progress is being made or self-destructing.

Cancellieri's Unforeseen Comeback

A single player kept smiling amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to remain with Lazio during this campaign. He spent the previous campaign with Parma on loan and, at the start of the off-season, his owning club were advocating for him to remain there temporarily. The signing restriction necessitated a reconsideration. Lazio could not afford to weaken their team with no new signings.

Cancellieri arrived initially during Sarri's previous tenure, then a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He made 20 Serie A appearances for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those as a substitute. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended following that term, subsequently claimed Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri would be a star then never playing him."

Uncovering His Best Role

Perhaps the manager was persistently working to work out the nature of the player's talent. Billed as an attacking winger on arrival, Cancellieri yet was deployed for most of that campaign as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile at No 9. In 63 appearances while playing for Empoli and Parma in the past two years, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
